HE acceptable criticism which this book has found in the Widest circles, and the quick sale of the first edition, might seem to relieve me of a preface to the second. Nevertheless, I cannot, and will not, allow the same to go forth without a word of explanation in reference to some kindred phenomena in the province of apologetic literature.
