In the last two cases we have the great advantage of knowing the acting forces and their periods of variation and we have thus only to examine a limited number of periods in the observed variations. In those cases, however, when we do not know the forces causing the variations and still less the laws of their action, it is probable that we can employ a similar operation to find a mathematical expression for the observed and the future variations.
