Methodism during its hitherto short, brilliant, and successful career. And as, at the outset, I stand off and look at its grand proportions, and gaze at its wondrous facts and features, the daze of intellect and emotions of astonishment thereby produced, I feel are a poor preparation for a fortunate entering upon, and a calm, accurate, and comprehensive survey of, the subject before me. A degree of self-assurance and of confidence in one's own ability is always necessary to a writer or Speaker, in order that he may do justice to the subject he may take in hand. And I must acknowledge that on this occasion this feeling is very greatly wanting to me. The lowliness of my expectations will therefore probably be the measure of my performance.
