The Rev. Mr. Philip gibbs, in the Year 1736, publifh ed an E joy towards a further Improvement of Sbarr-bano'. His hifiorical Account of compendious or fwift Writing, as an Introduction, I admire; but, notwithflanding that, I can not approve of his Meibod of Sbort-band. With refpeét to the Le'ttors of the Alphabet,-for 14. Of them he has adopted two Charaé'rers; tone to be ufed with Vowel: founded fbort and the other with the fame Vowels founded long: And a farther Reafon he afligns for that Practice, is to dif'tinguifll between Vowels and Diphthon'gs. This muft require more Quicknefs of Thought, and Strength of Memory, than many enjoy, _to write agreeable to it and, limit, I doubt, occa fion great Perplexity in the Reading.
