Mr. Balfour stuck tenaciously to his post in the House, and carried the Crimes Bill through successfully within the session. His duel With the Irish party during the long debates on the Bill was one prolonged contest between intellect and sheer animal strength. He invariably had the best of the argument, but over and over again he had to invoke the aid of the Unionist majority to stop the ceaseless stream of Irish talk. His sense of humour, and a subtle sarcasm, of which he showed himself possessed.
