Ed from France in 1803, the present State of Missouri formed a part of the acquired territory. In 1820 Missouri sought admission into the Union as a State, when it was proposed by the North to prohibit slavery in the new State. Discussion it was finally agreed that Missouri should have slavery, but the system was to be prohibited in all the United States territory north and west of the northern boundary.
