It has not been my desire, as it certainly would have been most repugnant to his feelings, for my Father to be represented as a faultless hero. His life is no private biography. F rom the close of the year 1845 to the year 1873, it is really a part of the annals of the Church of England, as well as the Memoir of Bishop Wilberforce. It is in this spirit that this Life has been undertaken it is in this spirit that it is given to the world. But it is equally certain that the true story of his life cannot be told without setting forth a great example, and without exhibiting a character of single-minded devotion to his country, to his Church, and above all to his Master.
