Among possible ways of maintaining a system1 whose spares have been exhausted, cannibalization is one that has been practiced over a long period of time by the military of many nations, albeit not always with the consent of the commanding officer. By cannibalization we mean the removal of a failed part2 from a system and its replacement by an Operating part of the same type extracted from another part of the same system. In a system consisting of two aircraft, a simple example of cannibalization is the switching of a damaged tire on one aircraft with a good tire on the second. If, for instance, the radar on the second aircraft is damaged and a replacement is unavailable, the exchange of tires may at least restore one aircraft to operating condition.

The practice of cannibalization is highly controversial primarily because the very act of extracting an operating part from a complex system can cause extensive damage to other parts of the system. On the other hand, in situations where it is crucial to maintain the performance of a system at a high level.
