I AM not responsible for the phraseology of the title of this Lecture. I feel bound to admit that it is open to criticism; and I propose for a moment to criticise it, not for the sake of finding fault, but because it appears to me that the remarks which I make upon the title of my Lecture will be a good introduction to the Lecture itself.

Take the words, The Origin of the World according to Science. You may have heard of an author who wrote a famous treatise upon The Natural History of Irish Snakes; the treatise was probably the most compendious and the most complete that was ever written; and it was all compressed into this emphatic sen tence, There are no snakes in Ireland. In like manner it might be truly said with regard to the words which I have just now quoted, There is no Origin of the World according to Science.
