So Solomon, whose name is a synonym of wisdom, thought, as appears in a part of the scrip ture preface to my discourse. It is taken from Ecclesiastes, which is substantially a review of Solomon's long life, and gives the result of his extended observation and experience.

He had seen that earth was not a theatre for the display simply of what was gladsome, and bright, and beautiful; but that into its drama entered things dark, and stern, and sad; all of which must be noticed and remembered, if we would understand the scene, and be prepared wisely to act our parts therein. There is, he says.
