He Was principal until 1866, when he became State superintendent, which' office he held for 14 years, during which period he was recognized as leading the progress the State made in education. He was officially editor of the School Journal; he was author of two pedagogical works of wide sale, School Economy and Meth ods of Instruction and his last work was a History of Education in Pennsylvania that will always be the standard authority. This address of Dr. Wickersham was per haps the best known and most widely influ ential of all his writings, and its publication in this form is in response to repeated.
