The book was written at the suggestion of an officer of high standing in charge of survey work, who,in the course of conversation on a long sea voyage, ex pressed his opinion very strongly, to the effect that an easy and elementary book on map projection would be of great use to many junior members of his survey staff, who found it very difficult to understand the regular treatises, and who often got lost in a mass of details.
