Its ever varying, cheerful flame enchains our attention as a living and sympathetic companion, long after the surrounding inanimate objects have ceased to occupy our thoughts. Hence the chimney-piece has, for ages, been honored and treated as the focus of interest; the key-note of the interior decoration of the apartment; and, so long as our physical natures remain the same, it is likely to continue to be so treated.
