I doubted for a moment, and in this prae tical mammon-worshipping world no one should doubt longer, to what epoch to take my reader; how far back it would be desirable or easy to carry him - or her. I say easy, because there is a constraint in placing before the audience forms dressed in antique garb and disguising thought in obsolete language; in endeavouring to represent that as stamped with the impres sion of the mind, which is but a hardly-sustained effort of imagination or memory. Hail to the masters of this art! They be but few, and it is dangerous to attempt to follow them.
