But there is another point on which the reader may with for fome explanation, before he enters on the perufal of the following pages. He will be aware that it can fcarce fall to the lot of any individual to attain to fuck a degree of perfonal knowledge of the habits, purfuits, and occupations of the dif ferent ranks and profeflions into which the higher and middle claires of fociety in this country are difiributed, as to qualify him to delineate their refpeé'tive duties with tolerable accuracy. And he may with juftice expefl: to be informed whether the author of the prefent performance has enjoyed advantages of any kind, affording him a chance of ac complifhing, in a fatisfaé'tory manner, the talk which he has undertaken.
