Bien que nous n'ayons à nous occuper que des facultés mentales chez les animaux et chez l'homme, nous ne laisserons pas d'examiner dans la matière minérale et chez le végétal les phénomènes qui offrent une telle analogie avec l'instinct, que certains observateurs ont voulu y voir les rudiments de l'instinct proprement dit. Ne serait - ce d'ailleurs que pour apprécier la valeur de cette hypothèse, la raison nous paraîtrait suffisante pour oommen cer l'étude de l'instinctpar celle des phénomènes qui s'en rapprochent.
