While they belong to a period in which the playwright relied more upon a tradi tional stock of ludicrous stage situations than upon the in trinsic humor of the subject or its treatment, they are, nevertheless, amusing reading, replete with fun and spright liness. The first appeals more particularly to boys, while the second is, perhaps, better appreciated by girls. The vocabulary is complete, rendering colloquialisms and, occa sionally, slang in kind. The teacher will find the exercises for re-translation helpful.
