Because people are attracted to any given area by economic opportunities and because economic opportunities are created by the presence of people, it is necessary that the population of Wayne County be studied in detail as a preface to the study of the economy. The people of Wayne County must be consider ed its most important asset for the development of sound economic growth.

Population data used in this report was obtained from the U. S. Bureau of the Census, unless otherwise noted. The latest census for Wayne County was conducted in 1960, and, thus, is somewhat outdated. But it should serve our purposes for comparison with past population trends and with other areas. It will also serve as a guide in preparing projections of future population.
