In the final chapter of the work the Alps, hitherto looked at as a whole, are considered in detail as forming twenty groups, with divers characteristic features. In the Appendix, Lists are given of the heights of the prin cipal peaks and passes of the Alps, arranged in the twenty groups enumerated above, of the dates of the successive conquests of the more important summits, and of some of the books relating to the chain as a whole that can be recommended to readers desiring to examine the subject more closely.
