Excerpt from The Use of the Word Derselbe From the Classic Period of German Literature to the Present Day: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculties of the Graduate Schools of Arts, Literature and Science, in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures)
The word derselbe has called forth much discussion in recent years. Scholars disagree as to its vicarious use, that is, in place of personal pronouns, possessive adjectives, or demonstratives. Some grammarians defend this use, others condemn it and regard it as a great hindrance to good style.
The purpose of this investigation is to trace the use of derselbe from the time of Goethe, Schiller and Lessing down to the present time, thereby determining to What extent its use has been restricted to the original meaning of same and how widely it has been used vicariously, in order to arrive at a fairly accurate conclusion of its real status in the language of the present day.
Only prose-works have been consulted for illustrations, since in poetry a word may be used or rejected on account of its length or for reasons of euphony. The material chosen was taken not only from standard works of literature but also from legal docu ments, scientific works, newspapers, bulletin boards Of German universities, and printed regulations for the guidance of the public.
