Few seem to have any conception of the disproportionate burden that has been thrown upon the transportation in dustry of the fact that to-day, as compared with thirty years ago, the increase in its effort necessary to enable our industrial civilization to function must be seven times the increase in the effort made by the producer. The producer in mining, lumbering, agriculture, or in manufacture, produces quantity which can be determined in terms of weight. The transporter produces ton-mileage, which is the product of weight and distance. A study of Figure I, prepared by the Federal Reserve Bank for the District of New York, shows.
