Excerpt from The Great Basin Naturalist, 1999, Vol. 59
Season OF emergence.-muscle power output of insects is severely restricted at low temperatures (josephson 1981, Marden and Kramer Stoneflies are no exception. Even winter-emerging species are sluggish and rarely fly at temperatures near or below freezing (frison 1929, Marden and Kramer In addition, during periods of extreme cold, winter stoneflies seek shelter under rocks, bark, and leaves (frison 1929) and are unlikely to be engaged in dispersal activities. Therefore, we assumed species that emerge in colder months are less likely to successfully disperse. We scored species with September to March emergence as 1, species that emerge from April to June as 2, and those that emerge from July to August as 3.
