What is stress? Is it an inevitable phenomenon 'out there' in the environment with which we must cope?
This book looks at some of the contemporary theory and research pertaining to stress and helps us to understand better what it is and how it affects our lives. Stress can be a positive as well as a negative factor. From this broad understanding of stress, the book engages and reflects upon the practice of ministry as the church prepares to enter the twenty-first century. Consideration is given to how both the society and the church view the 'role' of the clergy in today's world. How do changing societal trends which are beyond the control of the minister create stress? What is the effect of this upon the identity of the minister?
In this book specific consideration is given to such issues as relationships, isolation, women in ministry, the family and matters relating to sexuality and gender. The common threads of stress and identity interweave throughout these and other factors as they affect the total environment of the minister.
What then can we do? The latter part of the book is devoted to moving the reader towards a concept of wholeness and healthy balance centred in a renewed spiritual identity. From this integrated centre of being will grow balanced self-esteem, strong relationships, and a secure basis for ministry in a changing world. Support models are considered and the reader is invited to begin a continuing process to self-assessment. The establishment of a CARE group provides the basis for the support and objectivity of healthy peer interaction.
Overcoming unwanted stress is not a destination, but rather a process on the journey of life.
