The forces that mold the natures of the lands, seas, and airs of the earth now include man. Predictions of the consequences resulting from his ever-changing and ever-increasing activities require a substantial extension of effort in environmental sciences. It was toward this end that the North Sea Science Conference was convened in Aviemore, Scotland, 15-20 November, 1971.

The North Sea constitutes only four thousandths of one percent of the world ocean, yet it yields five percent of the world fish supply. It also supplies substantial quantities of gas, sand, and gravel (and, potentially, oil) to surrounding countries. However, these same countries pour many of their effluents into this relatively small body of water. How long the uses of the North Sea as resource and as receptacle can mutually continue is one of the principal points of this investigation. Scientists from nine countries, representing the disciplines of oceanography, meteorology, chemistry, physics, geology, and biology presented papers on every aspect of the North Sea, from avian resources to zooplankton. A sampling of the topics covered includes: Productivity of the North Sea; Industrial Uses; Currents and Water Masses; Climatology; Sediment Transport; and Mathematical Models. Numerous maps, graphs, charts, and illustrations are included as well as several extensive bibliographies. Marine and environmental scientists will discover these findings to have wide-ranging applications, in addition to their intrinsic value.
