But the most original feature of the book is the system invented for marking the pronunciation. Various systems are used in the French Dictionaries, but, besides imperfectly denoting the various sounds, they are really unintelligible to children, and very little used even by adults. It seemed, therefore, to the author, that a Phonetic Alphabet, adapted to the French language, would remedy this defect, and such an alphabet he has attempted.
