A series of four handling and transportation tests were conducted by Farmer Cooperative Service beginning in April 1959. These determined the extent of such losses and explored the relationship they might have to handling conditions and practices ordinarily prevailing in the movement of hogs from con centration points to slaughter.

The four periods of research were on a seasonal basis and conducted in the midwestern and western sec tions of the United States in coopera tion with Live 5 t o c k Conservation, Inc., transportation and marketing agencies, and the packing industry.

A total of 211 test shipments of hogs moving by rail and truck from midwestern origins to slaughter plants located in the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast States were ih cluded in the study. These shipments involved some head of swine observed during assembly, loading.
