Excerpt from Chinese Lessons for First Year Students in West China
Chinese Teachers. - It is a good rule to regard one's teacher as the authority, in case he and the dictionary differ. But we should keep an open mind; for one's teacher should be changed at the end of the first year, and will probably be changed at longer or shorter in tervals afterwards; and we soon find that teachers differ, often radically, even those who have grown up in the same city. In course of time we shall be able to form a judgment for ourselves, comparing what our teacher or teachers give us with what one or more dictionaries say.
