IN attempting to make this work a faithful record of the present state of Inorganic Chemistry, the author found that the limits within which it was originally intended to confine it were quite inadequate to enable him to treat the subject with that fulness which seemed to him desirable. It has been decided, therefore, to extend the work over two volumes. The present volume treats of the non-metallic Elements and their compounds; the second will be devoted to the considera tion of the Metals, and of those questions in Chemical Theory which, according to the author's experience, are most profit ably discussed after the leading facts of the Science are made known. The more important Laws of Chemical Combina tion, and the main principles of the Atomic Theory are however, considered immediately after the description of the Compounds of Oxygen and Hydrogen, in order that the student may understand the rational use of Symbolic Notation.
