Excerpt from Short History of the Yellow Fever, That Broke Out in the City of Philadelphia, in July, 1797: With a List of the Dead; Of the Donations for the Relief of the Poor, and a Variety of Other Interesting Particulars
The citizens became more early aware of their danger than in 17 9 3 and the fpeedy flight of many thoufands of them into the country, feems to have been the chief caule why the mortality of this contagion has been/{o much leis violent than that of the former. By the way; though not fo generally known as to create alarm, it is true, that in the fall of r 794, Philadelphia had a tranfient vifit from this fatal fcourge. A fmall number of perlons, perhaps twenty or thirty, died of it. The unexpected intervention of one or two days of a wind more than ufually cold for that feafon of the year, was the apparent caufe of its abrupt extinc~ tiou. Perhaps the infettion might be leis violent in its nature than that of the former year.
