Saving Opium, we know but of two fpecific Medicines in N a ture, that is Medicines which operate, by fome fecret and unknown Qiality, to wit 7mm Bark and Mercury, and thofe we have jult found to be infufiicient: It is not to be doubted however, but there' are many fpecific Remedies, could we but find them out, nay that there is fcarce a Difeafe, againft which all-bountiful Nature has not provided a peculiar Antidote; but as the jultelt Reafoning can afford us no manner of Infight into the (lualities and Operations of Medicines, a Knowledge which can be attained to by Experience alone, We mull: allow Time and Chance to have more {hare in bringing thefe to Light than human F orefight Chance only hav ing brou ht us to the Knowledge of the few, with which we are acquainte -indigenous Medicines, however, are too often as prepolteroufly negleéted, as Exotic Drugs are unfeafonably prefer red, by Us. - Is it not reafonable to fuppofe that the Creator of the World hath enriched every Country, with whatever Remedies the Difeafes peculiar to the Soil and Climate of Each would re. Quire and alfo that Medicines very proper for Diforders incident to one Part of the Globe, {hall yet be very improper for apparently fimilar Difiempers in another.
