Une distraction m'arriva, et qui devait me préparer les inquiétudes les plus poignantes et certainement le plus grand chagrin que j'aie éprouvé dans une carrière qui en a été semée cette distraction était l'arrivée à Paris d'une femme si malheureusement célèbre depuis sous le nom de comtesse de Lamotte.

Des fragments de ces Mémoires retrouvés dans les papiers de mon père, et relatifs au séjour du roi Louis XVIII à Gand et aux commencements de laseconde Restauration, sont publiés aujourd'hui pour la première fois.
Ces morceaux, joints aux extraits déjà imprimés, sont tout ce qui reste des Mémoires de mon grand père. Mon père n'avait pas cru devoir publier entière ment des souvenirs que, surpris par la mort, son auteur n'avait pas eu le temps de relire complétement.
