It is to be feared that the medical profession can have little direct influence in the making or repeal Of laws. The past does not show any encouraging success in this direction. The protection of the community against so dangerous and evident an evil as the unrestricted sale Of patent medicines of unknown composition, many containing powerful and deleterious drugs, has never been accomplished. The pro fession has found itself powerless against the immense pecuniary interests involved in the sale Of secret remedies, and has not been able even to compel the disclosure Of the composition of these preparations, so that the public might know what it is buying. How little, then, can we hope to do in the way Of enacting intelligent penal laws or of re.
