What debates ensued upon the introduction of this subject can only be imagined. It is to be inferred that the feeling in the Council that the attainders should be reversed, and some pecuniary reparation made to the sufferers or their represent atives, was general. Stoughton, who never repented of his connection with the trials, had been dead eight years; and the Mathers, though still professing unshaken belief in de monology, had long adopted the prevalent Opinion that the Devil could assume the shape of innocence, and they had not withstood the reaction, which had become almost universal, in favor of some, if not all, Of the accused; and their Opinions.
