The next great advance was made by Campbell in his design of and work with the Mills spectro graph of the Lick Observatory, described in the Astrophysical Journal, Vol. VIII pp. 123 - 56. The use of iron as a comparison spectrum (previously tried by Vogel and by Deslandres, but not regularly employed by them), together with the closest attention to the optical and mechanical construction of the instrument and great refinement in the measurement of the plates, enabled Campbell to increase greatly the accuracy of the determinations, so that the natural unit became the kilometer per second, instead of the sevenfold greater German geographical mile employed by Vogel.
