Excerpt from Descriptive List, 1902: Hardy New Fruits, Trees, Small Fruits, Roses, Flowering Shrubs, Vines, Bulbs, Etc.; Varieties Adapted to East, West, and the Extreme North and Northwest
Our locatio/n is one that has few equals in the state for growing hardy nursery stock. The senior member of this firm located here at Charles City, ninety miles west of the Mississippi and thirty miles south of the Minnesota state line, on the open prairies in 1866. On the original home stead there was nothing but wild crab and hazel brush. How he has changed it is fully attested by the magnificent groves of Evergreens, Black Walnut, Butternut, Elm, and large fine Orchards.
