Excerpt from Shadows, Vol. 14: May, 1925
Whenever a notice for entrants is posted many say to themselves, I'm' not good enough to enter. There is where they make a big mistake. They undeniably like golf and want to better their game and yet they fail to grasp the best opportunity of accomplishing this result.
There is nothing that will improve ones game so quickly as match play. It goes almost without saying that one has a great deal more to learn besides the strokes of the game, One may play golf well - alone - and yet play rather poorly when playing an opponent. The whole question of match play resolves itself into one of temperament. Quite obviously, little poise is needed when playing alone, but one is plentifully in need of it when playing an opponent, who is fighting for every hole.
