IT was not the original design of the author to under~ take that which at present forms the principal feature in his, work, the translation of the whole Book of Psalms. He is desirous of stating this, and of ex plaining the reasons for the enlargement of his original plan, from a consciousness that the attempt, on the part of a private individual, to give a new version of any part of Holy Scripture, requires the assignment of some very distinct and specific reason, to vindicate him from the imputation of presumption, or of a love of innovation.
