The Italian painters who took nature as their guide, the pupils and followers of the great Michel Angelo da Caravaggio, possessed, with few exceptions, the important secret of imbuing their works with a close adherence to natural objects rarely found in the pictures of those masters who painted only from the ideal. They portray nature as it is; they make no pretensions to any fixed idea of grace, of grandeur, or of refined sentiment, but they seem to have produced them without effort - intuitively at the same time it must be admitted that these masters invariably chose the most favourable and attractive moment, that they well knew how to charm the senses of the beholder, and to spirit him away into the world of their perceptions.
