Excerpt from The Box of Daylight

Climbing Cloud and walking-about-early were bit ter rivals for the honor of carrying the box of daylight for their father. But walking-about-early was Anvik's favorite.

At that time there were no people on Earth - only, as we have said, lumps and shadows. But Stone and Elderberry could scarce be counted as such, for Stone was a very ancient god, more solid and steadfast than the croaking Frogs, and Elderberry was far less shad owy than the ghosts.

So Stone and Elderberry each resolved to create real People - beings who should have form and life and sub stance, with just the faintest resemblance to the gods. This was a difficult task, and both Stone and Elder berry labored mightily, each trying to create People first. And had Stone succeeded, the People would have been hard and cold and enduring, but would have lacked all sap and gladness, and there would have been no joy in them.
