Il est difficile de juger ce qu'on aime; si pourtant l'atfection est prompte à atténuer ou a excuser les faiblesses de l'objet aimé, le chagrin qu'elle ressent des imperfections dont elle le voudrait exempt avive singulièrement sa per spicacilé pour les découvrir et son zèle pour les corriger. J'espere donc éviter les travers du panégyriste; aussi bien, je me contenterai d'exposer les faits, laissant les commentaires à l'appréciation du lecteur.

Les idées les plus justes triomphent rarement par leur seule justesse; elles ont besoin, comme l'or et l'argent ont besoin des alliages, du secours (les sentiments et des intérêts, qui les allèrent d'habitude, mais qui leur communiquent la. Vertu active, refusée. A la vérité toute pure. Le projet de Legrand devait demeurer à l'état de voeu et de vo'u stérile, jusqu'au jour où des combinaisons politiques, des influences littéraires. Un mélange de calcul d'enthousiasme et de dilettantisme entraînèrent le gouvernement, que les raisons des savants et des artistes n'avaient pas convaincu.
