John Rutherford, maternal udfather to the subject of this memoir, and one of t e pupils of Beer haave, was the first professor of the practice of ph sic in the universit of Edinburgh, to which office was elected in 17 and which he mi ed in 1766, in favour of the celebrated Dr Johnwife, the other of Sir Walter, was Jean Swinton, ter of Swinton of Swinton, in Berwickshire, one of the oldest families in Scotland, and at one period very powerful. Sir 'alter has ih troduced a chivalric representative of this race into his drama of Halidon Hill.
