Les monuments. L'architecture del'lnde commence avec le règne de l'empereur Açoka qui fit élever, selon la légende bouddhique, 84 000 édifices religieux. C'est au souvenir d'açoka que le Népal rattache aussi ses monu ments les plus ancinns. Pendant son séjour dans la vallée, l'auguste pèlerin aurait érigé cinq éaityas, l'un au centre de Palau, les autres aux quatre points cardinaux à l'entour de la ville. Açoka aurait voulu commémorer, par-chacun de ces quatre éaityas, la date initiale de chacun des quatre âges (yugar) du monde. Si peu fondée_quo soit la légende.
