HE inaugural lecture under the Foundation Of the Sir George Watson Chair Of American History, Literature, and Institu tions (which is administered by the anglo-american Society) was delivered by the late Viscount Bryce in 1921. His subject was The Study of American History, and the lecture was subsequently pub 'lished, towards the close Of the same year, by the Cambridge University Press. For a full account of the origin Of the Watson Chair readers are referred to the Appendix of that volume.1 The present volume contains the first full course of lectures under the Watson Chair Foundation. They were delivered, in the spring of 1922, at Lon don, Birmingham, Manchester, Shefiield, Cambridge, and Oxford, by Dr. A. T. Hadley, President Emer itus of Yale University, to large and representative audiences. Dr. Hadley has not only been, for more than twenty years, head Of a great American university.
