Excerpt from Studies Upon Leprosy, Vol. 4: Upon the Utility of the Examination of the Nose and the Nasal Secretions for the Detection of Incipient Cases of Leprosy

The following investigation was undertaken to determine if the theory of Sticker, that the nasal septum is the site of the initial lesion in leprosy, could be confirmed and be made the basis of a practicable public health procedure for the detection of incipient cases of leprosy in the community.

It is obvious that if leprosy, in a great majority of cases, begins as a disease of the nasal septum, the detection of the incipient cases of the disease should be a comparatively easy matter.
