Some of the English Railroads formerly fastened together with a brad all the papers bearing the same file number, attached a backing sheet, and glued the latter to a page in a large invoice book, the volume and page number of the book serving as the file number. The papers are pulled loose each time they are needed, frequently destroying the leaf to which attached and making it necessary to transfer the papers. The books soon fall apart and have to be rebound every few years. This practice has been largely discontinued though there are a few roads in Europe and one or two in this country where such books are being used.
