L'expédition, partie en 1253 du Lin - t'ao (chen-si) traversa la région du Kou-kou nor, le Thibet oriental et déboucha devant Ta - li fou. Deux autres armées venaient, l'une parla vallée du Kien - tch'ang et l'autre par la grande route de Souci - fou et Tchao-t'ong. Le Yun-nan fut enlevé en une chevauchée: d'autres expéditions vinrent successivement traverser la province pour aller combattre soit en Birmanie, soit au Tonkin. Marco Polo nous a laissé le récit de l'une d'entre elles.
