Les graines furent semées en nombre égal dans la même terre qu'on avait divisée en trois par ties. Quand les plantes eurent acquis la longueur de trois pouces, il constata que sur 100 grains, les gros pois avaient fourni 91 plantes, les pois moyens 90, et les plus petits 82 seulement. Avec les gros pois il avait donc perdu 9 pour cent de sa semence, avec les pois moyens 10 pour cent, et avec les plus petits dix - huit pour cent.
