Dans leur compagnie, Montchrestien prend le goût dela gentilhommerie. Comme l'imagi nation ne lui manquait pas, il s'invente un fief, le fief de Vateville, dont il eût été fort em barrassé de désigner la situation, et il se met à porter l'épée. Il pensaitsans doute, lui aussi, que tout poète naît de droit gentilhomme; mais, cette épée, ce n'est point seulement, pour lui, agrément de costume. Il s'en sert volontiers, avec une belle fougue, si bien que, un jour, il se bat, seul, contrele baron de Gou ville, lequel était assisté d'un serviteur et de son beau - frère. La lutte était par trop inégale; Montchrestien est laissé pour mort.
