Antibiotics. Intramuscular aqueous penicillin still remains the antibiotic of choice in unknown or prophylactic cases. It is wise to give this drug following the inhalation Of any of the aromatic or halogenated hydrocarbons or other volatile irritants as a prophylaxis against pneumonitis, mediastinitis or tracheitis. When the blood cul tures, nose and throat cultures reveal the causa tive agent, then appropriate specific antibiotic therapy should be instituted.
