Sigillum est un terme générique qui s'appliquait à toute espèce de sceaux, mais dont le sens était souvent fixé d'une manière plus précise, suivant que l'on voulait désigner les sceaux publics ou secrets. On cite, par exemple, une charte dans laquelle l'empereur Henri IV annonce que son père a scellé un acte, non du sceau ordinaire, communi sigillo, mais du sceau secret, secreto. Toutefois, le mot commune ne paraît pas avoir toujours désigné le grand sceau.
